Discuss the Birth of Jesus This Christmas

Posted on December 21, 2018 by .BIBLE Registry Categories: Spiritual

Talking about Jesus during the Christmas season is welcomed, even expected! Take an opportunity during the holidays to read and discuss the events surrounding the birth of Jesus.

Open up your Bible or app and read Matthew 1 - 2:23, or gather around and listen with Audio.Bible.

Engage in discussion, keeping the following teacher tricks in mind:

  • Before asking the provided questions to adults and/or youth, consider asking if anyone has a question pertaining to the reading, and start there.
  • When asking questions, consider if the topic has already been covered. Use only the questions that will help the discussion move forward.
  • Create a positive experience! When working with children, find easy questions to ask the youngest listeners. Call them out by name, and start with very simple questions they’re sure to know.

Questions For Children

  1. Who appeared and told Joseph that Mary was going to have a baby, born of the Holy Spirit?
  2. What group visited King Herod and asked about “the child born to be king of the Jews?”
  3. How did this group know where to find Jesus? What did they follow?
  4. What gifts did the wise men bring to Jesus?
  5. Joseph was told to move his family to save place. Where did they live until King Herod had died?

Questions For Older Children and Adults

  1. Talk through how each of the following men reacted to the news of Jesus’ birth:
    1. Joseph
    2. Magi
    3. King Herod
  2. What is the significance of Matthew’s references to the Old Testament verses in connection with Jesus’ birth?
    1. How do you see Jesus’ birth and life being predicted in these texts?
    2. Does it point to Jesus as the Messiah sent from God?
  3. Joseph, Mary and Jesus fled their homeland as refugees, and then again as they escaped Egypt.
    1. What kind of experience do you think they had? What hardships did they encounter?
    2. Compare their experience to that of today’s refugees.

Even if your group gets antsy (it’s not just the kids who get antsy!), take some time to ask a couple of the questions provided. Sharing time and thoughts will create lasting holiday memories for you and your loved ones.
